Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to provide remarkably clear and detailed 2- and 3-dimensional pictures of internal organs and tissues. MRI allows evaluation of body structures that may not be as visible with other imaging methods. MRA uses the same technology to provide detailed images of blood vessels in order to detect, diagnose and aid the treatment of heart disorders, stroke, and other blood vessel diseases.

Mission Imaging Center offers two MRI machines, a Hitachi High-Field Open MRI and a traditional GE 1.5 Tesla Scanner. The open MRI enables the scanning of larger patients, people who are claustrophobic, and pediatric patients with greater ease and without the loss of image quality often associated with open systems.

During an MRI exam, patients lie on a table that slides into a long tube, or in the case of the open-field MRI under a flat area. The imaging is done through a series of sequences, each lasting several minutes. The procedure is painless, but during the sequences patients must hold still and there is a loud knocking sound made by the machine, for which we provide earplugs. Some MRI exams require use of a contrasting agent to better highlight the area being studied. A specially trained technologist will sit in an adjacent room throughout the exam and can see the patient through a window. Communication takes place via an intercom system. A friend or family member can also be in the room with the patient.

Important Information for MRI Patients

Because of the magnetic field, extra caution is needed for MRI patients with any of the following conditions. If you have one of the items listed below, please call our center before your appointment, as an alternate imaging modality may be recommended.

  • Pacemaker
  • Defibrillator
  • Cochlear (ear) implant
  • Artificial heart valve
  • Metal plate, pin or other metallic implant
  • Aneurysm clip
  • Previous gun shot wound
  • Metal worker (past and present)
  • Permanent (tattoo) eye-liner
  • Pregnancy
